Honda Civic Gen 10 Type R Oil Cooler Kit

The Wunderladen Racing Type R oil cooler kit is unlike any other oil cooler kit on the market and is the last oil cooler kit you'll ever need!

From the factory the K20C1 has an oil heater that flows both engine coolant and oil through it to get the oil up to temperature faster. The downside is once the engine is up to running temp, now the coolant is tasked with trying to remove heat from the oil. This puts extra thermal load on top of an already overtaxed cooling system and if you're tracking your Type R you are probably well aware of how much these cars struggle to keep coolant temps in check on track and quickly get put into limp mode once they get too hot!

Unlike every other oil cooler kit on the market which all use a traditional/generic sandwich plate between the oil filter and the engine, our kit uses a bespoke oil cooler housing that replaces the factory oil heater. The cooler housing uses -10 ORB ports for large leak free o-ring sealed connections. It features an integrated thermostat to allow oil to get up to temperature fast and then closes once the oil has reached running temperature and all oil is forced through the heat exchanger. Lastly, our cooler housing doesn't allow coolant to flow through it so the engine coolant is no longer tasked with having to remove heat from the oil, giving it more bandwidth to cool the engine block and cylinder head.

The heat exchanger we use is a robust 19 row unit and is located in the main grille where it can receive sufficient airflow. The mounting brackets are made from stainless steel and are designed in such a way that they interrupt airflow as little as possible. Not only that but the brackets are entirely bolt on, using existing mounting points on the car means no drilling holes or cutting any metal to make it fit. This mounting position also keeps the hoses as short as possible (less than 3 feet total for both hoses!) which means minimal drop in oil pressure!

All of the mounting brackets are made from a robust stainless steel and are entirely bolt on; not drilling required! We include rivnuts and a rivnut install tool to put the rivnuts into preexisting holes in the back of the factory crash bar. All of the brackets are rubber mounted, and the cooler is rubber isolated on the brackets to minimize any vibrations or noise from the cooler.

The end result, lower oil AND coolant temps! We took our time to make sure we got all of the data we needed in testing to ensure that we could back up our claims; during hard track driving there was an average of 10-14F drops in peak coolant temps and even larger drops in peak oil temps! Rest assured this is the last oil cooler you'll need for your Type R!

What an oil cooler

Going to keep it simple and brief since I don’t see much on this oil cooler setup. It is honestly amazing, the concept of removing that oil heater allows for oil temps to remain cooler for much longer than a traditional oil cooler setup. I have ran it on 3 different tracks while doing multiple hot laps and my FK8 has never gone into limp mode. This kit also lets you run it on street. There are times when I am on the highway when I have to check my temps to see if they are even registering because of how cool it runs. Now I run a mostly stock power setup on my vehicle with nothing but cooling mods so results may differ between each user, but I do say just the heat exchanger replacement alone makes a massive difference. Now I do have some gripes. One this kit did not come with an install manual, granted I ordered this back when it first came out but the response for help installing this kit took forever and in the end I had to do this eye balling. Second the install process it kinda painful, if you want more room to run lines etc you are going to have to remove the condenser in order to fit your hands inside. Also I would highly recommend running it for awhile before buttoning your engine back together. I ran into typical an fitting leaks and unfortunately had to undo half the setup to fix the lines. Besides those two gripes this kit is seriously underrated and should be on everyone’s radar if they are seriously into modding.
